AJ Huisman is a coach for chief marketing officers (CMOs) and their teams on how to work better in an effort to generate better business outcomes.
His Mission- to offer a fresh perspective and mediate between marketing teams and the CMOs. He pushes the executes to be the chief rainmakers or drivers of change within their organizations.
Stay On Top of Change
One of the biggest challenges CMOs face is constantly adapting to the changes in technology. In order to cope with consistent shifts and the unrelenting pace, CMOs must surround themselves with an effective team. AJ notes that the position requires one to be the driver of change for a company; those who simply play the role of 'making it pretty' rarely last more than 2 years. They have to tie every action into business goals and driving growth or they will be making a swift exit. According to AJ, CMOs must reinvent themselves on a daily basis; agility is a requirement for constant iteration. By documenting everything, 2-month goals, daily tasks, etc, using SCRUM, it humanizes the marketing team and allows the client to see where every penny is spent.
Surround Yourself with Experts
CMOs must surround themselves with experts who utilize different technologies and systems. By trusting others, hiring intelligent team members, and communicating efficiently, CMOs can steer the ship while understanding how everything runs. AJ notes that driving change should be the main goal. They should create an environment where it is natural to fail sometimes in order to learn and grow.
A Fresh Perspective
Through his consulting service, Y Content, AJ offers CMOs a new perspective and food for thought; he insists that a moment of reflection can help drive substantial change in the constant hustle and bustle of life in the industry. Working as a mediator between the CMO and the team allows him to see the big picture and aid both sides in coming to a shared understanding. The Most Respectable Interpretation (MRI) assumes the best of others and allows team members to add value as well as not getting flustered or upset when things don't go smoothly. Trust, accountability, and transparency help build a great team.
